Plumbing PPC
PPC for plumbers that only runs when you can pick up
Google Ads campaigns for plumbing companies, split by job type, scheduled around when someone can answer the phone and judged by booked jobs rather than clicks.
- Emergency and planned work separated
- Ads scheduled to answered hours
- Ad spend paid to Google
Quick answer
ProntX manages PPC for plumbers and plumbing companies across the UK. We separate emergency, heating, drainage and installation campaigns, limit ads to the postcodes and hours you can serve, filter out DIY and trade-supply searches and track every call to a booked job. Plumbing PPC management starts from £450 a month, with ad spend paid directly to Google.
An emergency plumbing click can be one of the most expensive clicks a local business buys, and it is wasted the moment the call goes to voicemail. PPC for plumbers has to be built around the realities of the job: engineers on tools, vans spread across postcodes, and customers who ring the next number if nobody answers. ProntX builds plumbing PPC campaigns that run when you can respond, in the areas you want to work, for the jobs that pay.
Why plumbing ads often disappoint
We hear the same stories from plumbers who have tried Google Ads before: lots of clicks, few jobs; calls from forty miles away; people asking how to fix a dripping tap themselves; an agency that never showed what was spent. Almost every one of these comes down to settings, structure and tracking, not to Google Ads being wrong for plumbers.
When PPC campaigns for plumbing services make sense
Paid search suits firms that need calls quickly, want more of a particular job such as boiler installs, or are moving into a new area before organic rankings exist. Combined with SEO for plumbers, it covers the months while rankings build and can be turned down when the diary is full.
Structure
How should a plumbing Google Ads account be set up?
One campaign per job group, each with its own budget, schedule, area and landing page. Emergency and planned work behave so differently that mixing them wastes money.
| Campaign | Example searches | Schedule and area | Judged by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency | emergency plumber, burst pipe, water leaking through ceiling | Only hours with phone cover; tight radius around available vans | Cost per answered call that books |
| Heating repair | boiler not working, no hot water, boiler engineer near me | Gas Safe engineers’ working hours; budget raised in cold weather | Cost per booked repair |
| Installations | new boiler cost, combi boiler installation, unvented cylinder fitted | All day, as people request quotes in the evening; wider area | Cost per quote visit and per won install |
| Drainage | blocked drain, drain unblocking, drain survey | Matched to drainage crew availability | Cost per booked job |
| Bathrooms | bathroom fitters, bathroom installation quote | All day; area where you fit | Cost per survey booked |
Splitting campaigns this way means the budget for a profitable boiler install is never swallowed by late-night leak searches, and an emergency ad never sends a stressed homeowner to a page about bathroom design.
Missed calls
Why does the ad schedule matter so much for plumbers?
Because an unanswered emergency call is money spent for nothing, and the customer rarely rings back. Your ads should only run when someone can pick up or call back within minutes.
We start by asking a simple question: who answers the phone, and when? If calls go to an engineer’s mobile, emergency ads pause during hours when they are usually mid-job or off duty, unless you have an answering service or a colleague covering. Call assets put your number in the ad so customers can ring with one tap, and call reports show answered, missed and short calls by hour.
Missed calls are reviewed weekly. If a pattern shows, such as lunchtimes or Saturday afternoons, we adjust the schedule or bid down in those hours. We also set up a missed-call text-back where possible, so anyone you could not answer gets an instant message saying you will call back. Small changes like these often improve results more than any change to keywords.
Wasted clicks
Which searches should plumbing ads avoid?
DIY, jobs, training and trade supply searches, plus anything outside your area or services. A thorough negative keyword list is built before launch and grown every week.
- How-to and DIY searches, such as how to bleed a radiator
- Plumbing supplies, merchants, parts and tool searches
- Plumber jobs, apprenticeships, courses and salaries
- Services you do not offer, such as gas work if you are not Gas Safe registered
- Towns outside your area that share a name with a local street or district
- Free, cheap and cash-in-hand searches if they do not fit your pricing
We also check location settings. By default, Google can show ads to people interested in your area, not just located in it; for a plumber that means paying for clicks from people who will never be your customer. Search partner networks are reviewed separately, and automated bidding is only switched on once tracking is counting real calls and bookings, so it learns from jobs rather than page views.
Ad formats
Search ads or Local Services Ads for plumbing companies?
Often both. They appear in different places and charge differently, so running them side by side covers more searches. Your call data then shows which deserves more budget.
| Format | How you pay | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search ads | Per click | Full control of keywords, schedule, landing page and ad text; good for installs and specific jobs | Clicks cost money even if nobody calls |
| Local Services Ads | Per lead | Top-of-page position, verified badge, reviews shown | Screening needed, less control, leads need disputing when invalid |
| Ads in Maps | Per click or action | Promoted pin for people searching on the move | Needs a well-optimised Business Profile |
Landing pages
Where should plumbing ads send people?
To a page about the exact job they searched for, never the homepage. Emergency visitors need a phone number and a call-out fee; install visitors need prices, photos and a quote form.
An emergency landing page keeps it short: the areas you cover, typical arrival times, the call-out charge, your Gas Safe or WaterSafe details where relevant and a large call button. An installation page does more work: boiler brands and warranties, finance if you offer it, price ranges, photos of finished jobs and a form that lets customers upload a picture of their current setup. If your site cannot support that, we build the pages during setup or as part of a plumber website project.
Transparency
How do you know your PPC budget is being spent properly?
Because the ad account is yours and you pay Google directly. You can log in at any time and see every pound, every search term and every call.
Plumbers on trade forums regularly warn about two things: unsolicited calls from people claiming to be Google experts, and agencies that charge one figure and quietly spend less of it on ads. With ProntX, ad spend goes from your card to Google, separately from our management fee, and the account is created in your name. If you leave, it stays with you, history and all.
Monthly reports show spend, calls, answered rate, booked jobs and cost per booked job for each campaign, in plain English. New campaigns need a few weeks to settle before judging them, so we agree in advance what we will review at week two, week four and week eight. Our wider approach is on the Google Ads management page.

More for plumbers
Is Google Ads worth it for plumbers?
Usually, when campaigns are split by job type, limited to your area and hours, and tracked to booked jobs. Results disappoint when ads run while nobody can answer, show for DIY searches or send people to a homepage. If you are already fully booked, PPC can be paused until you have capacity again.
How much do plumbing clicks cost in the UK?
It varies by job and location. Emergency searches are usually the most expensive, installation and general searches cost less, and city areas such as London generally cost more than smaller towns. Published estimates differ widely, so we use Google's planning data for your postcodes and then your own account results.
What budget should a plumber start with?
Enough to get meaningful data on one or two job types within a month or so. The right figure depends on local click costs and job values. We suggest a starting budget during setup, and you pay it directly to Google, separately from our management fee, so you can change it any time.
Should I run ads for emergency plumbing at night?
Only if someone will answer. Night-time emergency searches can be valuable, but every unanswered call wastes the click. If you have overnight cover or an answering service, we schedule emergency ads to match. If not, ads pause and restart when your phones are covered.
What is the difference between Local Services Ads and normal Google Ads?
Local Services Ads charge per lead, show at the top of results with a verified badge and need screening first. Normal search ads charge per click and give you far more control over keywords, timing and landing pages. Many plumbers run both, then compare cost per booked job.
Why am I getting calls from outside my area?
Usually because location settings include people interested in your area, the radius is too wide, or a nearby town shares a name with somewhere distant. We set targeting to people located in your postcodes, exclude problem areas and check the location report every week.
How long before I know if PPC is working?
Calls often start within days of launch, but it typically takes four to eight weeks to collect enough calls and bookings to judge cost per job reliably and tune the campaigns. We agree checkpoints in advance so you know what we are measuring.
Can I see what you spend on my ads?
Yes, always. The Google Ads account is in your name, you pay Google directly and you can log in to see every search term, click and call. Our management fee is invoiced separately, so there is no mark-up hidden in your ad spend.
