SEO in Belfast has a twist that SEO in Leeds or Bristol does not: your customers may search on google.co.uk in Northern Ireland or on google.ie across the border, and the right website setup depends on which of those markets you want. ProntX is a London-based SEO agency helping Belfast businesses rank in the map pack, organic results and AI answers on both sides of the border, with SEO services from £595 a month and no lock-in.

A city at the centre of two markets

Belfast had 345,418 residents at the 2021 census and a metropolitan area of around 704,000. The Enterprise train runs to Dublin, Dublin Airport is about two hours away by road, and the new Belfast Grand Central Station opened in 2024. For many Belfast firms, customers in Dublin or along the border are as reachable as customers in Lisburn, but Google treats the Republic and the UK as separate countries with separate results.

What ranks for “seo belfast” now

The results are led by a long-established Belfast agency with a large library of its own guides, alongside a national agency with a Belfast page, an Irish firm whose contact details point to Dublin, smaller local consultancies and self-ranked lists. Clutch lists around 89 SEO firms serving Northern Ireland. Local pricing published by one Belfast agency runs from about £500 a month for foundation work to £1,500 and up for competitive markets.

Cross-border SEO

Should a Belfast business target Google UK, Google Ireland or both?

Target the country where your customers are, and if that is both, build the site so Google can tell which page belongs to which market. Mixing the two markets on one set of pages tends to leave both underserved.

Domain and structure

Google’s own guidance says a country-code domain such as .co.uk or .ie is a strong signal that a site is meant for that country, while a generic domain such as .com is not tied to anywhere. SEO practitioners on the Moz forum have long noted that a .ie site tends to perform best on google.ie and needs stronger signals to rank on google.co.uk, and the reverse is true for .co.uk. If you sell on both sides of the border, separate sections such as /ie/ on a .com, or two domains, usually beat one page trying to serve everyone.

Signals Google uses

Google lists local addresses, local phone numbers, local currency and links from local sites among the signals it uses, and supports hreflang to label English for the UK (en-GB) and English for Ireland (en-IE) as alternatives. It also advises against redirecting visitors by IP address and ignores meta geo tags. In practice that means euro prices and an Irish contact route on Republic-facing pages, sterling and a Belfast address on Northern Ireland pages. Our international SEO page covers the setup in more depth.

Belfast sectors

Which Belfast businesses benefit most from SEO?

Services account for around three quarters of jobs in Belfast, and the city’s growth has come from technology, finance, film and visitors. Each group needs a different kind of search plan.

Fintech and cyber

Titanic Quarter and the city centre

The UK Treasury has described Belfast as a key fintech hub, firms such as Citi, Allstate and Bank of America have operations in the city, and the Catalyst campus in the Titanic Quarter hosts a cluster of cyber security companies. Suppliers, recruiters and B2B service firms selling into this sector win through specialist, low-volume searches and credible expert content. See our B2B SEO approach.

Film and creative

Studios on the harbour

Film and TV production added £330 million to Northern Ireland’s economy between 2018 and 2023, centred on Titanic Studios and Belfast Harbour Studios. Crew services, equipment hire, accommodation and creative suppliers often sell to production companies from outside Northern Ireland, so national rather than local SEO is usually the priority.

Hospitality

Cathedral and Linen Quarters

Belfast received 153 cruise calls in 2023, landing 320,000 passengers, and its bar, restaurant and hotel districts compete hard for visitor searches. Up-to-date profiles, menus that Google can read and pages aimed at people planning a trip help independents compete with booking platforms.

Local services

South, east and north Belfast

Clinics on the Lisburn Road, trades in east Belfast and shops around the Ormeau Road each compete in their own map pack. Google weighs distance, so we focus on the areas your address can realistically win and build area pages only where you have real work to show.

SEO pricing

How much do SEO services in Belfast cost?

Working with ProntX

Can a London agency handle SEO for a Belfast business?

Yes, provided it understands that Northern Ireland is not just another UK region for search. We work remotely and do not claim a Belfast office.

Belfast clients work with ProntX through video calls, a shared dashboard and direct email with the specialist doing the work. With Belfast City and Belfast International airports both serving the city, a visit can be arranged when content or a shoot needs one. We rely on you for the local knowledge we cannot read in a search result, such as which areas and customers are most profitable.

Your website, Google Business Profile and analytics remain in your name, and you can stop at the end of any month. How much does SEO cost in Belfast?

Published Belfast pricing runs from about £500 a month for foundation work to £1,500 and up for competitive markets. ProntX starts from £595 a month for one location in one country, with Northern Ireland wide plans typically £900 to £1,500. Cross-border campaigns covering the Republic cost more because they need separate pages, research and links.

Will my Belfast website rank on google.ie as well as google.co.uk?

It can, but not automatically. Google treats a .co.uk domain as targeting the UK, so it tends to perform better on google.co.uk. To rank in the Republic you usually need Ireland-specific pages, euro pricing, hreflang tags labelling en-IE and en-GB versions, and links from Irish sites. We set this up only if you genuinely sell there.

Should a Northern Ireland business use .co.uk, .ie or .com?

Use .co.uk if nearly all your customers are in the UK. Use a .com with separate country sections, or run two domains, if you sell on both sides of the border. Changing domain later is possible but carries risk, so it is worth deciding before a rebuild. Our international SEO page explains the options.

Should my site redirect visitors from the Republic to an Irish version?

Not automatically. Google advises against adapting content by IP address because location detection is unreliable and its crawler may never see the alternative version. Instead, link the versions with hreflang and offer a clear country switcher so visitors and Google can both find the right page.

How long does SEO take to work in Belfast?

Map pack improvements for a well-run local profile can show in eight to twelve weeks. Competitive organic terms in Belfast, such as legal, finance or recruitment services, usually take six months or more. Adding a second country starts that clock again for the new market, which is why we phase cross-border work.

Do I need a Belfast-based SEO agency?

Not necessarily. Local agencies argue they understand cross-border search better, and some do. What matters is whether the agency researches both google.co.uk and google.ie for your terms and explains the setup. ProntX works from London, is open about it and arranges visits when they help.

Can you guarantee a top ranking for SEO Belfast terms?

No. Nobody controls Google, and ranking guarantees are a red flag. We commit to a written monthly scope, clear reporting and work aimed at enquiries from the areas and markets that matter to you, on rolling monthly terms you can end at any point.

Does SEO help with AI search for Northern Ireland businesses?

Yes. Clear answers, consistent business details and well-structured pages help AI tools such as Google's AI Overviews cite your business. For cross-border firms, stating plainly which areas and countries you serve, and in which currency you price, also helps AI answers describe you accurately.
