Restaurant SEO is won or lost in the few seconds someone spends looking at Google Maps on their phone. “Thai near me”, “Sunday roast [town]”, “best brunch Shoreditch”, “dog friendly pub with garden”: the venues that appear in the map pack with good photos, a readable menu and recent reviews get the booking. ProntX is a restaurant SEO agency for independent restaurants, pubs, cafés, bars and small hospitality groups across the UK, focused on the local signals that turn searches into covers.

Why restaurant SEO is different

Most diners never scroll past the map. They choose from three or four listings, check the menu and photos, glance at reviews and book or walk in. Your website still matters, because Google reads it to understand what you serve, but the Google Business Profile is the shop window. A beautiful site with a PDF menu and a half-finished profile will lose to a plainer competitor that has done the basics properly.

What owners tell us they have tried

Many restaurant owners have paid for “SEO packages” that delivered directory listings and a monthly ranking report for keywords nobody searches. Others were offered fake reviews, which UK law now bans outright and which Google can remove or penalise. Good local SEO for restaurants is less glamorous: accurate details everywhere, a menu Google can read, real reviews, and steady local relevance.

The map pack

How do restaurants rank higher on Google Maps?

By being relevant to the search, close to the searcher and more prominent than nearby rivals. You cannot move your kitchen, so the work goes into relevance and prominence.

Relevance

Tell Google what you serve

Correct primary category (for example “Italian restaurant” rather than just “Restaurant”), secondary categories, attributes such as outdoor seating, vegan options and wheelchair access, and a menu with dish names as text.

Prominence

Reviews and mentions

A steady flow of recent reviews with replies, mentions in local guides and food blogs, links from local organisations and consistent details across directories, Apple Maps, Tripadvisor and booking platforms.

Conversion

Make choosing you easy

Fresh photos of real dishes and the room, accurate opening hours including bank holidays, a booking or order button that works, and posts for events, set menus and seasonal changes.

Bookings increasingly start inside Google itself. Reserve with Google connects your profile to booking systems such as ResDiary, SevenRooms, OpenTable and others, and Google has added restaurant booking to its AI search in the UK. These integrations generally require a claimed profile whose name, address and phone match your booking system exactly. A mismatch is a quiet reason a “Book” button never appears.

What we do

What do restaurant SEO services include?

A complete local foundation in the first month, then ongoing content, reviews and profile work that keeps you visible as menus, seasons and competitors change.

  • Google Business Profile audit and rebuild: categories, attributes, hours, menu, photos, booking links
  • Menu published as crawlable HTML on your site, with dietary labels, not only as a PDF or image
  • Restaurant and Menu schema, plus opening hours and price range markup
  • Consistent name, address and phone across Apple Maps, Bing, Tripadvisor, TheFork and directories
  • Booking system and Reserve with Google checks so the Book button appears where possible
  • Pages for occasions people search: private dining, Christmas parties, bottomless brunch, set lunch
  • Review request cards, QR codes and follow-up emails that stay within CMA fake review rules
  • Replies to reviews in your voice, including the difficult ones
  • Local outreach to food writers, neighbourhood guides and event listings for genuine links
  • Monthly reporting on calls, direction requests, booking clicks and website bookings

We also check the details that build trust. Your website should load fast on a phone, show allergen information clearly and state how diners can ask about the 14 major allergens. Displaying your food hygiene rating online is encouraged by the Food Standards Agency, required for display at premises in Wales and Northern Ireland, and a strong rating is worth showing everywhere diners look.

AI search

Do AI assistants recommend restaurants?

Yes, and they draw on the same signals as Maps: your profile, your website, review text and mentions in local guides. Venues with clear, consistent information are easier for them to recommend.

When someone asks an AI assistant for “a quiet Italian in Islington for an anniversary” or “a pub near Box Hill that serves food on Mondays”, the answer is assembled from sources it can read and trust. A website that states plainly what you serve, when you open, whether you take bookings, which dietary needs you cater for and what the room is like gives those systems something solid to quote. Review text helps too: diners who mention “great for groups” or “lovely garden” describe you in words people search with.

We write your key pages so a person or an AI can answer the basic questions in seconds, and we make sure local guides and listings carry the same facts. It is the same work that helps your AI search visibility generally, applied to the questions diners ask.

Beyond “near me”

What searches can a restaurant rank for besides its name?

Dish, cuisine, occasion and feature searches. These are where new customers find you, and most venues ignore them.

Search type Examples What wins it
Cuisine best ramen Manchester, Lebanese restaurant Ealing Primary category, menu text, reviews mentioning the cuisine
Dish Sunday roast near me, bottomless brunch Leeds Dedicated pages, profile posts, dish photos with clear names
Occasion private dining room Bristol, Christmas party venue Occasion pages with capacity, menus and enquiry form
Feature dog friendly pub, restaurant with garden, gluten free café Profile attributes, website copy, review mentions

Hospitality SEO for groups and pubs adds one more layer: each site needs its own location page, profile and reviews. A single “our venues” page cannot rank in five neighbourhoods. We build a page per venue with its menu, atmosphere, transport and parking, and anything that makes that site distinct from the others in the group.

Occasion content needs planning ahead. Christmas party searches start building from late summer, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day weeks before the date. We publish and update these pages early enough for Google to rank them before diners start comparing.

FAQ

Restaurant SEO questions, answered

Still unsure? Ask us anything. We reply within one working day.

Is SEO worth it for a restaurant?

For most restaurants, yes, because a large share of new diners choose from Google Maps and search results. The most valuable work is local: a complete Google Business Profile, a readable menu, accurate details everywhere and genuine reviews. If you already have these and are fully booked, extra SEO matters less. If tables sit empty midweek, visibility for cuisine and occasion searches can help fill them.

How can my restaurant appear in the top three on Google Maps?

Choose the most specific primary category, complete every attribute, keep hours accurate, add real photos, publish your menu as text, collect recent reviews and reply to them, and make sure your name, address and phone match everywhere. Distance from the searcher still counts, so you will rank best close to your venue and for searches where your cuisine or features fit.

Does responding to Google reviews help a restaurant rank?

Replies help indirectly. They show Google and diners that the business is active and cares about feedback, and thoughtful replies to negative reviews often reassure people reading them. Review quantity, recency and the words diners use matter more for ranking. We help you reply consistently without sounding defensive or copied and pasted.

Should our menu be a PDF?

A PDF can sit alongside, but your main menu should be text on a web page. Google reads text far more reliably, which helps you appear for dish and dietary searches like 'vegan curry' or 'gluten free pizza'. Text menus also load faster on phones and are easier to update when prices or dishes change. Add the menu to your Google profile as well.

Can we buy reviews to catch up with competitors?

No. Since April 2025 UK consumer law has banned fake reviews and concealed incentivised reviews, and Google can remove them, restrict your profile or suspend it. The safe route is asking every happy table at the right moment, with a QR code on the bill or a follow-up email after a booking, and replying to all reviews.

How long does restaurant SEO take?

Profile and listing fixes can show results within weeks, particularly if categories or hours were wrong. Occasion and cuisine pages typically take two to four months to rank, so seasonal content needs publishing well ahead. Reviews build gradually. We report on calls, direction requests and booking clicks monthly so you can see movement before rankings settle.

Does a restaurant need a website if it has a Google profile?

Yes. Google uses your website to confirm what you serve and where, and many diners click through to check the menu, allergens, private dining options or booking before deciding. A fast, simple site with a text menu and booking button supports your profile. Delivery app listings are not a substitute, because you do not control them.

How much does restaurant SEO cost in the UK?

ProntX restaurant SEO starts from £595 a month for a single venue, with no long contract. Groups with several sites typically pay £900 to £1,500 a month because each venue needs its own profile, page and reviews. Larger groups are scoped individually. You see a written scope first and can stop with a month's notice.
