Education PPC agency

PPC for education that fills courses, not just forms

Google Ads for schools, colleges, universities and training providers, structured by course and intake, ready for Clearing and judged on enrolments rather than clicks.

  • Campaigns per course and intake
  • Clearing campaigns built in advance
  • Cost per enrolment reporting

Quick answer

ProntX is an education PPC agency running Google Ads for UK independent schools, colleges, universities and training providers. We build campaigns by course and intake, prepare Clearing and open day campaigns in advance, keep ranking claims within ASA guidance and track cost per application and enrolment. Management starts from £450 a month, with ad spend paid directly to Google.

PPC for education puts your school, college or course in front of people at the moment they search for it: “sixth form colleges near me”, “part-time accounting course”, “nursing degree clearing”. ProntX builds Google Ads accounts for education providers around courses, intakes and decision dates, so spend follows demand and every pound can be traced to an enquiry, application or enrolment.

Why education ad accounts waste money

The accounts we review tend to share the same problems. One campaign covers every course, so popular subjects take the whole budget. Ads keep running after a course is full. Conversions count prospectus page visits rather than real enquiries. Clicks from Clearing ads land on a generic homepage or a download form, when the searcher wanted a phone number and a list of vacancies.

None of these need a bigger budget to fix. They need a structure that reflects how your admissions actually work, a list of courses that still have places, and someone checking search terms every week during busy periods so that spend follows the students you still need to recruit.

Who our education PPC services are for

  • Independent schools promoting open mornings and scholarships
  • FE and sixth form colleges with many courses and intakes
  • Universities and departments recruiting for undergraduate, postgraduate and Clearing
  • Private training providers and professional qualification courses
  • Language schools, tutoring centres and online course providers
  • Driving schools and adult learning centres serving a local area

Account structure

How should an education Google Ads account be structured?

By course or year group, by intake and by audience, so you can control budget where places need filling and pause campaigns the day a course closes.

Course level

One campaign per subject group

Each subject or programme gets its own keywords, ads and landing page, with budget set by how many places remain. Courses that hit target can be paused without touching the rest.

Brand

Protect your own name

Searches for your school or university name are the cheapest, highest-converting clicks you will buy. A small brand campaign stops aggregators and competitors taking them.

Location

Targeting by catchment

Day schools and colleges recruit from a travel radius. We use location targeting set to people actually in your area, with exclusions where search interest from elsewhere wastes money.

Audience

Separate domestic and international

International recruitment needs its own campaigns, budget and landing pages. Mixing them hides what each market costs and confuses bidding.

Peak moments

How do you run PPC for Clearing, open days and deadlines?

Prepare early, launch on time and watch closely. Education demand comes in bursts, and campaigns built in a hurry during a burst rarely recover the lost days.

Clearing for universities

Clearing searches spike around results day in August and fall away quickly. We build Clearing campaigns weeks ahead, get ads approved, and hold them ready to switch on as vacancies are confirmed. Automated bidding relies on history, and Clearing day behaves unlike any other day, so we set manual budget caps and check spend through the day. Landing pages show live vacancies and the Clearing phone line first.

Open days and open mornings

For schools and colleges, the open event is often the real conversion. We run search and paid social campaigns in the weeks before each event, measure registrations rather than clicks, and stop when the event is full or has passed. Remarketing reaches people who viewed admissions pages but did not book.

Application deadlines

Families researching state school options in England work to 31 October for secondary and 15 January for primary applications. Independent schools and colleges often run their own deadlines. We plan budget increases ahead of the dates that matter to your audience, then scale back when the window closes.

Keywords

Which searches should a school or college pay for?

The ones that show intent to study with you this year. Generic education terms attract researchers, job seekers and students of other courses, and they are usually the most expensive clicks in the account.

Keywords we usually prioritise

  • Your school, college or university name, plus “open day” and “admissions”
  • Course names with a level and mode, such as “part-time HNC engineering”
  • School type plus town or area, such as “prep school” plus your location
  • Deadline searches: “clearing”, “September start”, “January intake”
  • Qualification searches from adult learners, such as “AAT course evening”

Keywords we usually exclude

  • Teaching jobs, vacancies and salaries
  • “Free” courses you do not offer
  • Subjects or levels you do not teach
  • Past papers, revision notes and homework help
  • Locations outside your realistic travel area

Paid search works best alongside organic visibility. Course pages that already rank through education SEO lower how much you need to spend, and a joined-up education marketing plan means paid campaigns fill gaps rather than carrying everything. Our Google Ads management service and wider PPC services follow the same principles across all industries we work with.

Ad copy rules

What can education ads claim?

Only what you can prove, worded the way the evidence supports. ASA rulings against universities show that ranking and superlative claims are read literally.

Rankings

Name the table and the year

CAP Executive advice says ranking claims should name the league table and date, use only categories the table publishes and make clear when data has been reworked.

Superlatives

“Best” needs evidence

Words like best, leading or No.1 must match a precise, verifiable claim. In a 30-character headline that is rarely possible, so we keep headlines factual and put context on the page.

Fees and outcomes

Match the landing page

Fees, start dates and outcomes in ads must match what students are actually offered. Higher education providers also have consumer law obligations explained in CMA advice.

Client sign-off on every claim

We write the ads; your marketing, admissions or compliance lead approves them before launch. ProntX never adds outcome statistics without seeing the source.

Tracking

What results should you expect from education PPC?

Clear numbers on cost per enquiry, cost per open day booking and, where your systems allow, cost per enrolled student.

What we set up

  • Conversion tracking for forms, event bookings and calls
  • Offline conversion import from your CRM or admissions system
  • Search term reviews to cut irrelevant clicks
  • Negative keywords for jobs, free courses and unrelated subjects
  • Monthly report by course, campaign and intake

What we will not do

  • Count page views as conversions
  • Run Display and Search together by default
  • Keep spending on courses that are already full
  • Hold your Google Ads account in our name
  • Promise a cost per enrolment before seeing your data

FAQ

Education PPC questions, answered

Still unsure? Ask us anything. We reply within one working day.

Is Google Ads worth it for a school or college?

It can be, if you know what an enrolment is worth and you can track enquiries back to ads. Advice from school marketers and tutoring businesses is consistent: work back from fees, years of study and your enquiry to enrolment rate to find what you can afford per click. Broad terms such as private school burn budget quickly; specific course and location searches usually pay back far better.

How much does PPC for education cost?

ProntX management starts at £450 a month, ex VAT, on a rolling contract. Ad spend is separate and paid directly to Google from your own account. Click costs vary widely by subject and location, and published benchmarks are mostly US figures, so we use Keyword Planner data for your own courses and area to set a starting budget before launch.

How should universities prepare Google Ads for Clearing?

Build and approve the campaigns weeks before results day, then switch them on as vacancies are confirmed. Clearing searches arrive in a short, intense burst, and automated bidding has little history to work from, so budgets and bids need close watching on the day. Send clicks to pages with current vacancies and a phone number, not a gated download.

How do you stop ads showing to people outside our catchment?

Google's default location option shows ads to people in your area and to people elsewhere who show interest in it. For a day school or local college that interest traffic is often wasted, so we usually switch to the Presence option, which targets people likely to be in or regularly in your chosen locations. Google notes targeting is best effort, so we also review location reports monthly.

Can our ads say we are ranked in the top 10?

Only if the claim matches the league table exactly. ASA and CAP advice says to name the table and its date, use only categories the table defines and avoid implying a wider comparison. Ad character limits make qualification hard, so we often move ranking detail to the landing page and keep ad copy factual. Your compliance or marketing lead signs off every claim.

Should we target international students with the same campaigns?

No. International applicants search differently, often in different languages and at different times, and care about visas, fees and accommodation. We build separate campaigns with their own budgets, landing pages and location settings, so domestic results are not distorted and you can see what each market actually costs.

What should we track as a conversion?

Open day and event registrations, prospectus requests, enquiry forms, calls of a meaningful length and applications started. Counting every page view or button click inflates results and confuses Google's bidding. Where your admissions or CRM system allows, we feed enrolled students back as offline conversions so campaigns are optimised towards students who actually join.

Do you run paid social as well as Google Ads?

Yes. Search captures people already looking; paid social reaches local parents or students before they start searching. Many schools use both around open days. See our social media marketing for education page for how we handle that side, including pupil image consent.
