Social media marketing for schools and educational institutions

Content that shows real school and college life, paid campaigns that fill open days, and a consent process for pupil images that your safeguarding lead is happy with.

  • Consent-first pupil content
  • Open day paid campaigns
  • Reporting on enquiries, not likes

Quick answer

ProntX runs social media marketing for educational institutions: independent schools, colleges, universities and training providers in the UK. We plan content with your staff, manage pupil image consent, run paid social around open days and report on enquiries and bookings rather than follower counts. Social media management starts from £650 a month on a rolling contract.

Social media marketing for schools and educational institutions is how families see what your prospectus cannot show: the lessons, the matches, the concerts, the way staff talk to pupils. ProntX plans and runs social media for schools, colleges, universities and training providers, with a consent process for pupil images built in from day one and paid campaigns that turn interest into open day bookings.

What parents and students look for

Before visiting, families check social media to confirm the impression your website gives. They look for everyday life rather than polished promotion: what a normal Tuesday looks like, how sport and music are run, how the school responds to questions. A feed that goes quiet for half a term, or only posts notices, tells them something too.

Current parents matter as well. Many who skim newsletters still scroll Facebook or Instagram daily, which makes social a practical channel for engagement, not just recruitment. Parents who feel connected also share posts with friends, and word of mouth remains one of the strongest admissions channels any school has.

Who we work with

  • Independent schools, from prep to sixth form
  • Further education and sixth form colleges
  • University departments and student recruitment teams
  • Nurseries and early years providers
  • Training providers, language schools and tutors
  • Driving schools building local reputation

Safeguarding first

How do you keep school social media safe and compliant?

By treating pupil images as personal data, checking every post against consent records and agreeing in advance what never gets posted. Your safeguarding lead approves the process before we start.

Consent

A cleared image register

ICO guidance says families must be told how official images will be used and pupils should be able to opt out. We work from your consent list and keep a record of which images are cleared for which channels.

Identification

No names with faces

We do not pair pupil names with photos, avoid uniform details that pinpoint location where your policy asks, and check backgrounds for timetables, registers or screens before posting.

Paid targeting

Parents, not children

Meta restricted ad targeting for under-18s in 2023 to age and location only. For admissions we target adults in your catchment and retarget website visitors, which suits both the rules and the decision makers.

Claims and outcomes

Exam results, league table positions and leaver destinations are powerful content, but they need to be accurate and sourced. CAP Executive advice on ranking claims applies to social posts and ads as much as to prospectuses. Your marketing or compliance lead signs off every claim before it is posted.

Content

What should schools post on social media?

A balanced mix of learning, achievement and personality, planned around the school year so there is always something real to share.

Learning

Inside the classroom

Short clips of practical lessons, projects and trips, with teachers explaining what pupils are doing and why.

People

Staff and student voices

Teacher introductions, sixth formers on why they chose you, alumni updates. Faces build trust faster than logos.

Community

Sport, arts and events

Fixtures, concerts, productions and charity days. These are the posts current parents share, which extends your reach for free.

Admissions

Visits and deadlines

Open morning reminders, short campus tours, answers to common questions about fees, transport and entry.

Short video works especially well: 60 to 90 second tours and day-in-the-life clips can be reused in ads and on landing pages. We plan these around your calendar so the content exists before the open day campaign needs it.

Working with your staff

How does an agency run a school’s social media without adding to teacher workload?

Staff capture moments in seconds; we do the editing, captioning, checking and scheduling. The process is set up once and then runs through the term.

Week one

Policy and consent review

We read your social media, photography and safeguarding policies, agree a named contact for approvals and set up a shared folder where cleared staff can drop photos and short clips from a phone.

Each half term

A calendar built from your diary

Fixtures, trips, performances, open events, exam seasons and holidays go into one plan, so content is scheduled ahead and the account stays active through busy and quiet weeks alike.

Every week

Check, caption, approve

Every image is checked against consent before captioning. Your contact approves the week’s posts in one batch, usually in a few minutes, and we handle replies and messages within agreed hours.

School holidays need planning too. Families research schools over the summer, so we prepare evergreen content such as tours, staff introductions and answers to common questions before term ends. If you also want more parents to find you through Google, our SEO for education service uses the same content. Our general social media marketing approach, and the other sectors we support, follow the same measured, ownership-first model.

Platforms

Which platform does which job for an educational institution?

Each platform reaches a different part of your audience. We pick two or three, give each a clear purpose and measure them separately.

Platform Main audience Best use for education
Facebook Current and prospective parents Community updates, event reminders, open day ads by catchment
Instagram Parents and older students Visual school life, Reels, Stories for timely updates
TikTok Sixth form and college applicants Student-led short video, course tasters, campus life
LinkedIn Staff, alumni, employers, partners Teacher recruitment, apprenticeship and employer links, research news
YouTube Families researching in depth Full tours, head’s welcome, recorded open events

Paid social

Do social media ads work for school admissions?

They work best for one job: getting local families to book a visit. Paid social reaches parents before they start searching, which search ads cannot do.

How we run open day campaigns

  • Location targeting around your realistic catchment
  • Adult audiences likely to have children of the right age, where platform rules allow
  • Video and carousel ads built from your organic content
  • Retargeting people who viewed admissions pages
  • Registrations tracked as the conversion, not clicks

What we report each month

  • Enquiries and open day bookings from social, organic and paid
  • Cost per booking for each campaign
  • Which posts drove website visits to admissions pages
  • Comment and message response times
  • Reach and engagement, as context rather than the headline

Paid social sits within our wider paid social service, and many schools combine it with PPC for education so that families who see an ad and later search for you land on the right page.

FAQ

Social media for schools: your questions answered

Still unsure? Ask us anything. We reply within one working day.

Which social media platforms should a school use?

It depends on who you need to reach. Parents of younger children are most reachable on Facebook and Instagram; sixth form and college applicants spend more time on Instagram and TikTok; LinkedIn helps with staff recruitment, alumni and university partnerships. Most schools do better running two platforms well than five badly, so we choose based on your admissions audience and the content your staff can realistically supply.

Can schools post photos of pupils on social media?

Yes, but with care. ICO guidance says that photos taken for official school use are likely to be covered by data protection law, families must be told how images will be used, and pupils should be able to opt out. Age 12 is a common guide for when children can make their own choices. We work only from your consent records and never name pupils alongside photos.

Can we target teenagers with paid social ads?

Only in limited ways. Meta announced in 2023 that ads to under-18s would use only age and location, removing interest and gender targeting for teens, and it paused ads to under-18s in the EU. Rules change, so we check current policy before every campaign. For school admissions, targeting parents in your catchment is usually more effective anyway.

How often should a school post on social media?

Consistency matters more than volume. School marketing advice commonly suggests two to four feed posts a week plus Stories for timely updates, and that works for most schools. Around open days, results and major events, frequency rises. We agree a realistic calendar with your staff so the account never goes quiet for weeks during term.

How much does social media marketing for a school cost?

ProntX social media management starts at £650 a month, ex VAT, covering planning, content creation from your material, scheduling and community management on two platforms. Paid social ad spend is separate and paid directly to Meta or TikTok. Larger colleges with more platforms, video production or several campuses usually sit higher. See our pricing page.

Who creates the content, us or the agency?

Both. Your staff see the moments that make good content: lessons, matches, performances, trips. We give them a simple way to share photos and short clips, then edit, caption and schedule them. For key moments such as open days we can plan shoots. This keeps the content authentic, which parents notice, without adding hours to teachers' workloads.

How do you handle negative comments about the school?

With an agreed moderation policy. We reply quickly and politely to genuine questions, move complaints to private channels in line with your complaints procedure and hide or remove abusive or safeguarding-sensitive comments. Anything involving a named pupil or member of staff goes straight to your designated contact. We never argue publicly with parents.

Do you work with driving schools and private tutors?

Yes. Driving schools, tutors and small training businesses use social media mainly for local trust: pass photos with consent, reviews, availability updates and short tips. The audience is often 17 to 25, so Instagram and TikTok usually matter more than Facebook. The same consent and claim rules apply on a smaller scale.
